WELCOME ADDRESS

On behalf of the Local Organising Committee, it is a great pleasure to invite you to attend and participate in the 47th Annual Meeting of the EASD in Lisbon in 2011.

Lisbon lies on the north bank of the Tagus Estuary, on Europe's Atlantic coast. It is the most western city in continental Europe.

Lisbon offers a wide variety of options to the visitor, including beaches, countryside, mountains and areas of historical interest only a few kilometres away from the city centre. Most likely founded by the Phoenicians, influenced by the Moors and enriched by the spice trade in the golden age of its overseas empire, Lisbon is a historic capital, a potpourri of unusual character and charm, an amalgam of 800 years of cultural influences mingled with modern trends and lifestyle creating intricate and spectacular contrasts. Lisbon is the birth place of the oldest diabetes association – the Portuguese Diabetes Association. Founded in 1926 by Ernesto Roma, today it is a model of diabetes care.

The Meeting will take place in Parque das Nações, in the Lisbon International Fair. This was an old industrial zone, entirely rebuilt for the 1998 EXPO on the Tagus river, with good access by metro and wonderful views. Sessions will take place in the pavilions of the international fair (fil) and in the adjacent Atlantic Pavilion.

The Meeting will start on Monday 12 September with third party "Meetings on the Occasion of the EASD Annual Meeting". The Opening Ceremony will take place on the morning of Tuesday, 13 September. The Meeting will end at lunchtime on Friday, 16 September with the Closing Ceremony followed by the Farewell Reception.

We wish you a rewarding meeting with interesting contacts and an opportunity to visit (or revisit) a hospitable and attractive city. We look forward to seeing you in Lisbon in September 2011!

Luís Gardete-Correia
Chairman, Local Organising Committee
