Francesco Giorgino is Professor of Endocrinology and Chairman of the Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and Ionian Area at the University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, Italy. He is also Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at the University Hospital Policlinico Consorziale in Bari.

Professor Giorgino received his M.D. degree from the University of Bari Aldo Moro and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Naples Federico II, in Italy. After completing clinical training in endocrinology at the University of Catania, Italy, he worked at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, USA, as a postdoctoral research fellow and visiting scientist (1990-1994).

He has received scientific awards from various institutions, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) Fellowship (New York, NY, USA), the Mary K. Iacocca Foundation Fellowship (Boston, MA, USA), the Glaxo-Wellcome Award from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the Aldo Pinchera and Cassano Awards from the Italian Society of Endocrinology, and the Alcmeone Award from the Italian Society of Diabetology. He has been President of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (2019-2021) and is currently Senior Vice-President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

His research interests include the mechanisms of insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes and the effects of diabetes drugs on pancreatic islets and the cardiovascular system. He has an H-index of 73 and over 20,000 citations (Google Scholar).

Dr. Fawaz Alzaid is an investigator in diabetes research focused on metabolism, inflammation, and macrophage biology. His team has 1 PhD student, 2 post-docs, 3 technical staff, and 1 scientist. Their projects investigate innate immune cell diversity, transcriptional mechanisms of inflammation and energetic adaptation in metabolic disease (diabetes, obesity). His highlights include publications in Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, EMBO Molecular Medicine and Circulation Research on mechanisms of tissue inflammation and complications of diabetes. Dr. Juliana Chan is Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Director, Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity. She is an endocrinologist and clinical pharmacologist with interest in epidemiology, genetics, clinical trials and care models.

In 1995, she set up the Hong Kong Diabetes Register and later the web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Platform to implement personalised care and collaborative research in Asia. By setting up biobanks to accompany these registers which are linked to hospitalization data, her group has developed outcome models, discovered molecular signatures and created real-world evidence for prevention and treatment of diabetes with precision, value and quality.

She has published over 900 articles and 20 book chapters and is a committee member of landmark trials and working groups of practice guidelines. In 2020, she led the Lancet Commission Report on Diabetes which advocated using data to transform diabetes care and patient lives.

Linong Ji is Professor of Medicine at Peking University, Director of Peking University Diabetes Center and Director of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Peking University People’s Hospital, in Beijing, China.

Prof. Ji is also President of Chinese Geriatric Endocrine and Metabolism Society, Chairman of Diabetes and Metabolic Disease Clinical Research Committee of China Pharmaceutical Innovation and Research Development Association (PhIRDA), Vice President of China Stroke Society and Executive board member of Asia Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD). His previous roles include Chair of International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region (IDF-WPR; 2018-2019), President of the Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS; 2009-2012) and Vice President of IDF Global (2012-2015).

Prof. Ji received his MD from Beijing Medical University in 1986 and completed his postdoctoral at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School. His research interests include genetics of diabetes, translational research and new pharmacological treatment of diabetes and obesity . He has served as Principal Investigator in over 90 clinical trials of new diabetes / obesity medicine and devices and authored more than 600 original papers in peer-reviewed journals. He was named by Elsevier as "Highly Cited Scholars in China" (2020-2023) and Selected into the top 2% of the world's top scientists in 2023 by Stanford-Elsevier list of the world’s most-cited scholars

Dr. William Lumu holds Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery(MBcHB) degree, Masters of Medicine in Internal Medicine from Makerere University, Masters of Science in Diabetes from Cardiff University and a PhD in Medicine (Diabetology) from Texila American University.

He is a Physician and Diabetologist at Mengo Hospital. He is a senior lecturer at Uganda Christian University. He is recently appointed as member of the Global Council of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. He is a member of Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society of Southern Africa (LASSA). He is a full member of D-Foot International representing Uganda. He is the current Vice Chairman of Uganda Non Communicable Disease Alliance and President of Uganda Diabetes Association. He is a former member of Board of the International Diabetes Federation Africa-region.

Dr. William Lumu has profound experience in treating patients with diabetes over 15 years. He leads diabetes management in Mengo hospital where he helped establish a diabetes clinic which currently has 8,000 registered patients. He has been key in the development of diabetes management protocols in the hospital. He is passionate about prevention of complications among Type 2 diabetic patients. His research interest is atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in type 2 diabetes and how this can be mitigated by well trained nurses using a chronic care model in the primary care setting. With increasing rates of amputation in the country, he has embarked on prevention of DFD through training of health workers and educating patients on appropriate foot ware and other risk factors.

Dr. William Lumu is one of the lead consultants for the development of the first Integrated Chronic Kidney Disease (ICKD) management guidelines for Uganda, funded by AstraZeneca, Healthy Heart program and Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB). He is the lead consultant for the ongoing SANOFI/ UPMB Non-Communicable Disease program where over 150 first level health workers have been trained on diabetes, hypertension and breast cancer management. He is a member of the insulin advisory board for EVA Pharma Uganda.

He was a lead consultant for the Gestational Diabetes Project in Central Uganda funded by World Diabetes Foundation (WDF15-1219) implemented by Reproductive Health Uganda, Danish Family Planning Association and Uganda Diabetes Association that ran from 2016 to 2018 where 10,000 women were screened and managed for gestational diabetes (GDM). One of the key out puts of this project was a feasibility report on screening and management of GDM in Uganda. He was a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) for Norvo Nordisk Buddy Doctor Initiative program where he mentored over 100 doctors in a diabetes management.

Dr. Peter Senior is the Director of the Alberta Diabetes Institute, the Charles A Allard Chair in Diabetes Research and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta. He has clinical appointments as the Medical Director of the Clinical Islet Transplant Program and staff endocrinologist for Alberta Health Services, in Edmonton, Canada.

Education

He completed his specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the UK, where he received his PhD in 2002.

Research & Recognition

His clinical and research interests focus on type 1 diabetes, hypoglycemia, diabetic kidney disease and islet transplantation. He has published approximately 200 scientific articles. He received the Gerald Wong Service Award from Diabetes Canada in 2020 for “diabetes research, clinical care, the organization and diabetes advocacy”. 

Volunteer & Leadership Roles

He recently completed two terms on Diabetes Canada’s Board of Directors including 3 years as Board Chair. Previously he served as Chair of Diabetes Canada’s Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Committee and its Professional Section. He continues as Medical Director of the Alberta D-Camp for children with Type 1 diabetes.

Professor Daisuke Yabe has been investigating the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and clinical safety and efficacy of anti-diabetes drugs in management of type 2 diabetes as well as medical nutrition therapy for diabetes in the Asian population. His research interests include the molecular basis underlying proliferation and differentiation of pancreatic beta cells. 

Professor Yabe obtained MD from Kyoto University (Japan), and PhD from the University of Texas Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (USA) under the supervision of two Nobel Laureates, Professors Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein; and conducted postdoctoral training at Kyoto University under the supervision of Professor Tasuku Honjo and at Kansai Electric Power Hospital under the supervision of Professor Yutaka Seino. 

Professor Yabe served as Professor and Chairperson for the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gifu University and he is currently serving as Professor and Chairperson for the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine. While Professor Yabe is actively involved in clinical and basic research related to diabetes, he is also dedicated to diabetes care and education as a diabetes specialist.

He serves as an executive board member of the International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region as well as that of the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD), and he is an active member of the International Affairs Committee, the Science Committee and the Diabetes Education Committee, The Japan Association for Diabetes Education and Care (JADEC); and the International Affairs Committee and the Public Relations Committee, The Japan Diabetes Society.

Professor Yabe received The Masato Kasuga Award from AASD; The William Cullen Award from JADEC; and the Albireo Award from Japan Society of Metabolism and Clinical Nutrition.

Prof. Zoungas is a clinical endocrinologist, physician researcher, and academic leader. She is an international authority in diabetes, vascular health and ageing with leadership roles in clinical research, education and advocacy. Currently she is the Head of the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, and the Academic Director of the Monash University Clinical Trials Centre. Prof.

Zoungas is the 2024 International Co-President of the World Health Summit. She played a leading role in the organisation of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2024 – Australia, Melbourne. The event was hosted by Monash University and focused on the future health of people across the Asia Pacific, exploring how science, innovation and policy can unite to address our region’s most critical health challenges.

Research

Prof. Zoungas is a global leader in delivering investigator-led large-scale clinical trials. Her research focuses on the generation and implementation of the best evidence for the prevention, screening and management of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This includes total grant success (>$80 million peer reviewed in the last 10 years including NHMRC, Heart Foundation and Commonwealth Dept of Health). Prof. Zoungas is experienced in conducting ambitious multi-site projects (e.g. ADVANCE, ADVANCE-ON, STAREE) which are by their nature multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral and have a major impact on public health and clinical care. Prof. Zoungas’ international standing has resulted in prestigious invitations to contribute to the steering committees and independent data safety and monitoring boards of a number of large-scale outcome trials.

Research Impact

Prof. Zoungas’ pivotal research from the ADVANCE trial and ADVANCE-ON study led to a paradigm shift in clinical management of type 2 diabetes: this research has shown legacy benefits for serious kidney outcomes from earlier intensive glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes, as well as an adverse relationship between hypoglycaemia and cardiovascular events such that glucose management is now individualised globally to maximise benefits and minimise risks.

>310 publications (>40% as first/senior author) with >190 in the last 10 years, total citations (Google scholar) >28,000 and 3 publications cited >1000 times, 61 publications cited >100 times and first author of 2 publications in the New England Journal of Medicine 2010 and 2014. In 2020 she was recognised by The Australian as the most cited researcher in the field of diabetes. Prof. Zoungas has a current h-index of 81.
